There is only one step from the street to the galeries. Supakitch’s and his wife’s fame is not to make anymore, but for those who don’t know them yet, a little tune is needed.
At the age of 21, Supakitch, who at that time had already been Artistic Director in different advertising agencies, meets another artist, a charming girl studying architecture. We are in 2000, right in the emergence of a mouvement which we’ll call « Street Art », and it’s in this context that they will learn to fulfill themselves in urban art.
He grew up in Paris, at a time when graffiti artists like Bando or Darco where already fucking up the walls and trains of our dear capital. He takes the blaz of « Ride » so as to establish the « HV Crew ». But his work fastly goes over from pure graffiti to more advanced forms. He meets the graffers Hazy and Eone, respectively photographer and music producer. At that time he begins to mix different supports and techniques, playing on phtography, painting, graphics, and, obviously, music.
His wife comes from Montpellier, where after having been decorator on advertisement shootings, she decided to focus on her art, exposing since she is nineteen. It’s in their inspiration that Supakitch and Koralie are going to resemble each other. The japanese universe is always present in their work, mixing extravagance and modesty into a sensual geisha becoming over the years her leading character. Sensitive to the urban environment, she is part of a virtuous circle of street art by showing her work in the street.
Nowadays, both touch everything, whether by founding the brand Metroplastique, by promoting brands like Posca and Carharrt, or by spreading teddybear heads in NYC’s street. It’s in their common creations that we have the impression of a real touch of life. We realize that their love finds a strong growth in art. We could quite believe in a sort of lovemaking in the painting, which gives this sort of pop-romantic touch to their manga and comic’s characters. This poetry is more detectable in videos published on the web, which started their celebrity.
Supakitch’s characters all have a soul, that he often refines. As the artist mixes music to his artwork he even talks about « graphic melodies », which shows his state of mind, remaining very visual. That’s why the project « Listen to my picture» was born, four years ago. He painted a selection of his personnal vynils and earned the nickname « Image Dj». We can see his nostalgy of 12-inch singles, nowadays dethroned by the Mp3. From these are born the Supapods, greedy ipods which eat vynils digesting them under MP3. Denonciation or simple observation ?
Two characters side by side are holding hands in the center: the famous geisha of Koralie, and an enigmatic fox with a colorful plumage wearing a suit... A wonderfull Mister Fox revisited by Supakitch. The message is clear, we are in front of the avatars of both artists. Moreover, if you have the opportunity, watch the wonderfull video realized by Elroy who had the good idea to share this artwork with us. You will feel by their precise gestures that we are talking about real Michelangelos. Each grabs half of the wall, two different worlds in a same universe: Mars and Venus finally came together.
Their way to appropriate the materials and techniques as the Posca, brush, airbrush, collage... give an impressive effect of detail profusion. The result gives a sensation of lightness and liveliness thanks to the colors on the bright background of the sun that shines on the avatars.
Today, it’s at Clinton Hill in Brooklyn, NYC that Supakitch and Koralie installed settled down with their two children, their brushes and imagination. Situated next to the Pratt Institute ( international art school), they seem to feel at home. It’s there that they fullfill themselves by playing with colors on urban environment as a musician would play with notes. As the musician Franck Hammoutère said, « Nothing is built without having been, openly or not, drawn.»
